Lucy Caffery is NPL’s Chief Customer Officer, leading the organisation’s customer strategy and ensuring that NPL’s world-leading science delivers maximum value and impact for customers, industry and society.
Lucy has more than 25 years of experience across science, technology and innovation-led organisations in both the public and private sectors. She has delivered customer-focused growth and translated complex scientific and technical capabilities into real-world solutions. She combines deep commercial expertise with a passion for helping organisations maximise the impact of innovation. Since joining NPL in 2018, Lucy has held several senior leadership roles across the commercial business, supporting the translation and commercialisation of NPL’s cutting-edge science and strengthening the organisation’s customer focus.
Lucy spent a year on secondment to government, where she played a leading role in the design and launch of the Government Office for Technology Transfer (GOTT). On returning to NPL, she established the organisation’s award-winning technology transfer capability. Lucy also acts as a Board Observer for NPL’s spin-out companies.
Before joining NPL, Lucy held leadership roles at Accenture, including leading the UK innovation programme. In this role, she focused on incubating new digital solutions through emerging technologies, innovation methodologies and rapid prototyping. Earlier in her career, she led software engineering teams at Symbian, helping to deliver pioneering smartphone products to market.
Lucy began her career at the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and holds a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Leeds.
