Joy Schmeer

Higher Scientist

Joy Schmeer is a Higher Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). She joined NPL in 2024 and works on the management of the UK's air quality monitoring networks, including the Automatic Urban and Rural Network, Heavy Metals Network, Black Carbon Network, and Particle Number and Speciation Networks. She also supports the development of NPL's ozone measurement service.

In addition, Joy delivers research projects on airborne environmental DNA (eDNA), working with a wide range of collaborators and stakeholders to improve metrological understanding and support the development of harmonised sampling and analysis methods.

Before joining NPL, Joy completed a PhD in Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow at the University of Surrey, where she investigated experimental methods for modelling pollutant dispersion in urban environments using the national EnFlo wind tunnel facility. She also gained a first-class BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Surrey. Her final-year project explored cyclists' exposure to road vehicle emissions. During her industrial placement year, she gained international research experience at École Centrale de Lyon in France.

Joy's achievements have been recognised through several awards, including first place in the Wind Engineering Society's Young Researcher Prize and the Judges' Choice Award in the University of Surrey's Three Minute Thesis competition. She is an Associate Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
