Josh Whale is a member of the fountains team within the Time and Frequency group at NPL. His work is centred around the construction of state-of-the-art caesium fountain systems for the new distributed UK time scale initiative and international research partners. He is also involved in the development of novel miniaturised atomic clock designs to create new commercial routes to market as well as the day-to-day handling of data in the service of steering and upkeep of the national timescale.
Josh was awarded his PhD in picosecond acoustic studies of semiconductor nanostructures using ultrafast lasers from the University of Nottingham in 2019. After a short post-doc manufacturing solid-state electronics for a collaboration with the space research group at Sussex he joined NPL in 2020.
