Harris Nikolaou
Higher Scientist
Harris Nikolaou obtained a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Coventry University before completing an MSc in Acoustics and Vibration Engineering at the University of Southampton. He then worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), contributing to research in room acoustics. In 2025, he joined the Underwater Acoustics team at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
Current Interest
Harris is a Higher Scientist in the Underwater Acoustics team, supporting the delivery of NPL’s underwater acoustics services and research programmes. His work includes digital hydrophone and autonomous recorder calibration, uncertainty evaluation, and research into emerging sensing approaches, including particle motion and fibre-optic technologies.
His interests include underwater bioacoustics, particle motion sensing, and the characterisation of underwater acoustic instrumentation. Harris also contributes to the development of international standards and measurement methods for bioacoustics and particle motion applications.
