Ana Mendes Emygdio

Higher Scientist

Ana Mendes Emygdio is a higher scientist in the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group (AQAM) at NPL. In her current role, Ana focuses on sensor performance assessment and gas-phase pollutant monitoring using dedicated exposure chambers. Her work supports the validation of emerging technologies and the development of innovative air quality monitoring systems.

Ana joined AQAM in 2024. Prior to this, she completed an MSci in sustainability and a PhD in meteorology at the University of São Paulo. She then spent three years as an experimental officer at the University of Surrey, where she managed the Air Quality Laboratory (AQL), ensuring its safe and efficient operation and providing specialised guidance for research projects.

Building on this experience, Ana has developed strong expertise in air pollution monitoring and characterisation, including particulate matter, biogenic aerosols, gaseous pollutants, and both indoor and outdoor air quality. Her skills include chemical analysis of air samples and extensive experience with a wide range of air quality monitoring tools, from advanced research-grade instruments to emerging low-cost sensors.
