NPL and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in quantum science and technology, marking a significant milestone in the two nations’ strategic relations on measurement standards.
The MoU, announced during German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s State Visit to the UK, forms part of wider £14 million package to strengthen science and technology ties between the UK and Germany.
The MoU sets out a framework for joint research, knowledge exchange, interfacility comparisons and joint workshops, with a focus on pre-standardisation and the development of international quantum standards. The partnership between NPL and PTB will support the acceleration of unlocking quantum’s potential while ensuring breakthroughs are supported by rigorous metrology and internationally agreed standards.
Dr Peter Thompson CBE, CEO, NPL said: “This agreement reinforces the UK’s commitment to accelerating innovation and the development of quantum technologies. By strengthening our partnership with PTB, we can ensure quantum innovations are underpinned by trusted science and metrology, enabling global impact.”
