Measurement of temperature, displacement and strain in harsh environments

The HTMTC cordially invite interested persons to a workshop hosted by NPL exploring state-of-the-art measurement techniques for temperature, displacement, hardness and strain in non-ambient environments. The seminar will provide a forum for sharing current best practice, emerging capabilities and practical challenges associated with measurement under demanding test conditions, with particular emphasis on thermocouple stability, non-contact temperature and strain measurement methods, calibration of equipment under both static and dynamic test conditions, and the possibilities and limitations of residual stress measurement in challenging environments.

Presentations of 20 minutes are invited on the following topics, with 10 minutes allowed for questions.

  • Thermocouple stability and sensor drift in non-ambient environments
  • Non-contact temperature, displacement and strain measurement techniques
  • Hardness measurement under non-ambient and service-representative conditions
  • Calibration of equipment at test conditions, including static and dynamic methods
  • Measurement uncertainty, traceability and standards in non-ambient testing
  • Full-field deformation measurement, including digital image correlation
  • Residual stress measurement in non-ambient environments: capabilities and limitations
  • Data acquisition, synchronisation and interpretation for dynamic measurements
  • In-situ monitoring and validation of material behaviour under service-representative conditions
  • Case studies in high-temperature and other non-ambient mechanical testing

The workshop will be held in the main auditorium at NPL, Teddington. Access for events at NPL is via the Hampton Road entrance, Teddington, TW11 0LW. Regular train services connect Teddington with London Waterloo, and local bus routes serve the area. Please note that the NPL Teddington site is within the ULEZ
