Contact Thermometry
- NPL tests the insulation of underwater oil and gas pipelines used to transport oil from deeper, hotter fields.
Bespoke thermal calibration by NPL (PDF 723 Kb)
NPL has calibrated 85 resistance thermometers, with bespoke methods, to enable RAL Space to control and characterise the temperature uniformity of five blackbodies for OHB and TAS-F as part of the MeteoSat Third Generation (MTG) programme.- NPL has recently completed a project with ESA-estec to develop self-validating temperature sensors for applications up to 2300 °C.
- NPL's new technology in thermal metrology has enabled British industrial partners to move forward with ultra-efficient jet engine. Through industrial implementation of a Co-C Fixed Point for Thermocouple Calibration.
- NPL combined its expertise and facilities in temperature and humidity measurement to calibrate a wireless clinical thermometer for healthcare company.
Non-contact Thermometry
- NPL has undertaken two field tests to investigate the practicality of using thermal imaging to detect wheel-rail events in real time.
- NPL has developed reliable temperature reference phantoms, against which Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy thermometry measurements can be validated, even in high magnetic fields.
- Thermal imaging metrology - all aspects of infrared (IR) thermal imaging camera measurement, its development and application.
- The use of thermal imaging for quality control in heating fabrics.
- NPL has performed laboratory and field-based tests for a UK wetsuit manufacturer, to help further their knowledge of how wetsuits keep people warm.
Humidity
- NPL's multi-gas, multi-pressure humidity generator has been used to test the performance claims of GasSecure's explosive-gas detector, for potential use within gas processing plants.
- NPL's unique multi-gas, multi-pressure humidity generator has been used to support the development of a new water vapour spectrometer by Michell Instruments.
- NPL provided a humidity calibration at air temperatures down to -40 °C for the UK Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM).
- Progressive non-destructive laboratory measurements of moisture content have been made as a means of tracking changes in a bioabsorbable polymer over the course of its degradation.
Training
- NPL scientists delivered a training course on temperature measurement to scientists and engineers from the European Space Agency (ESA).
- NPL temperature scientists deliver training course at NASA.
