Emerging Electronics

Emerging electronics makes use of novel materials and novel manufacturing processes to create electronic devices that can be easily integrated into a wide range of products: from large area flexible electronics to wearables and implantable electronic devices. Understanding the impact of processing on material properties and device performance/reliability is critical.

Electronics Interconnection

Electrical interconnects are an intrinsic part of any electronic system. The interconnect has to perform on a wide range of substrates and under wide range of environmental conditions, and survive induced stresses from thermal, mechanical, corrosive and electrical factors. In many instances the capability of the interconnect is a road block to realising the full performance of the functional circuit.

The demand for traceable electrical and magnetic measurements is broadening as new materials and techniques have brought the need for these measurements to new areas of industry. There are a large number of parameters of interest, covering an ever-increasing range of values and frequencies. To provide traceability for these, NPL is involved in continuous development of measurement techniques and facilities. This gives NPL a unique range of facilities and experience in magnetic measurements.

Photovoltaics (PV) are semiconductor-based devices that convert light into electricity in a direct process. Promising new technologies need to demonstrate high performance, reliability and scalability of manufacture. In parallel, consumers, governments and manufacturers need to have confidence in how much energy different PV technologies will generate under realistic operational conditions.
