Standard calibration services

Easy access to commonly requested calibrations

As well as providing a wide range of calibration services, NPL has packaged the most commonly requested calibrations into a list of services. These represent standard configurations, calibration methods and a unique order reference code that can be included in quotation requests to allow quicker response from our customer service team.

NPL remains committed to continuing its full range of calibrations and if the exact service you require is not listed below, please contact us for a more bespoke quotation.

Force transducer calibrations

This table represents the common force transducer calibration configurations. They are UKAS accredited up to 5 MN and can be offered according to BS EN ISO 376:2011 and/or ASTM E74– 18. In the case of BS EN ISO 376:2011 class capabilities these are 00 for forces up to 1.2 MN, 1 for the force range of 1.2 MN to 5 MN and 2 for incremental modes in the force range of 5 MN to 12 MN.

Strain gauged column certification

UKAS-accredited concrete testing laboratories must have their strain gauged columns (strain cylinders) certified every two years. NPL certifies strain gauged columns in accordance with Annexes A2 and A3 of BS EN 12390-4:2019.

The certification of the strain gauged column includes the measurement of the height, diameter, flatness and parallelism of the end faces. A rotational test to determine the value of strain ratio, for the strain gauged column, is undertaken using NPL’s 3 MN reference compression machine. NPL has the facilities to refurbish the end faces of a strain cylinder if necessary.

Extensometer calibration rig calibration

NPL provides UKAS-accredited calibration of extensometer calibration rigs in both compression and tension directions. This conforms to both BS EN ISO 9513:2012 and ASTM E 83-16. The range of measurement is 0 mm to 1000 mm with an expanded uncertainty of
± (31 + 3.1R) nm where R is the extension in mm.

Barometer calibrations

Barometers can be calibrated anywhere in the range 800 hPa to 1100 hPa, and we offer common barometer calibration configurations. Barometers are calibrated against a standard barometer with a rising and falling pressures at a series of points. The gas used for the calibration is normally compressed air. The UKAS accredited calibration accuracy for this service is ± 0.05 hPa.

Barometers must have a pressure connection port to enable them to be connected to a closed pneumatic system. Handheld battery-operated barometers can also be calibrated.

Gas-operated pressure balance calibration

NPL provides a UKAS accredited calibration service pneumatically (gas) operated pressure balances. This table provides a list of the most common instrument calibration configurations. Uncertainties for the measurements are dependent on the pressure range. The best uncertainty level for the pressures in the calibration range is provided below.

Mass calibration

NPL provides a UKAS accredited calibration service for masses from 0.05 mg up to 50 kg. This table provides a list of the most common weight calibration configurations which covers reference weights as well as E1, E2 and F1 classes of calibration weights.

For orders covering partial sets, additional weights or requiring multiple individual weights please stipulate multiples of the order reference relating to individual weights. For a complete set of 30 weights spanning 20 kg to 1 mg, a separate code can be used.
