Tharini Nimsala Herath Pathiranage

Scientist

Tharini completed her master’s degree in chemistry at Cardiff University in 2022. Her master’s thesis was completed in collaboration with the Cardiff Catalysis Institute. Under the supervision of Professor Graham Hutchings, the project focussed on developing morphologically controlled ceria nanostructures as supports for a platinum-based catalyst. This catalyst proved to be successful in a range of octanol oxidation reactions in the liquid phase. Prior to joining NPL, Tharini worked as a Blood Lab Analyst, where she was testing radioisotopically labelled drugs for clinical trials. She was appointed as a writer for ‘The Catalyst Magazine’ in July 2022 and often writes articles on her scientific interests.

Areas of interest and Scientific outlook

Tharini is a highly motivated and determined scientist working for the electrochemistry group at NPL. She has a strong passion for green chemistry, physical chemistry, and electrocatalysis. Tharini is involved in delivering projects under the corrosion theme that are currently focused on nuclear waste, power generation, and carbon capture and storage technologies.

Her responsibilities at NPL are linked to the following areas:

  • Performing corrosion tests in industry specific environments and in accordance with standard test methods
  • Understanding the mechanisms of corrosion by electrochemical and metallography techniques
  • Identifying solutions to mitigate corrosion of metallic materials in service
  • Researching on environmentally assisted cracking of metallic materials
