The Awards, now in their thirteenth year, are run by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognise excellence in two areas: businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces.

On being recognised as highly commended, Becky said:

"Doing this apprenticeship at NPL has been the best thing I have ever done. I have developed so much as a person and have had so many amazing experiences. Being recognised in the awards has been so rewarding and I really do feel a massive sense of achievement."

Becky was highly commended in recognition of the contribution she has made to NPL since joining as an apprentice in 2015. During her 18-month apprenticeship, Becky exceeded her company's expectations by developing her own measurement service, earning her department income. She has proven her competence and ability to work independently on projects, and has been a key member in supporting the senior scientists with their research. She has also been heavily involved in Outreach, particularly reaching out to young girls in STEM, as well as helping run and create a three day 'Science camp' LABTASTIC, for 30 school children.

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said:

"The National Apprenticeship Awards enable talented apprentices and committed employers to receive the recognition they truly deserve - celebrating the achievements of apprentices and businesses and allowing them to gain the credit for investing in their own futures, whilst driving up quality and encouraging others to get involved.

"Becky King has been highly commended in the National Advanced Apprentice of the year award and I would like to congratulate her on her brilliant achievement."
