Announcing Dr Thompson's appointment on 18 June 2015, Dr David Grant, NPLML Chair, said: "On behalf of NPL's Board, I am delighted to welcome Dr Thompson as our new Chief Executive Officer. Dr Thompson brings considerable experience and achievements in leadership roles of strategically important science and technology laboratories. Additionally, his leadership of national and international partnerships developing and applying world-leading science and technology, are very important skills to support and lead NPL's ambitions for the future."

Dr Thompson was previously the Deputy Chief Executive of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Peter spent the early part of his career applying niche technology ideas to national security challenges, particularly in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance fields. He has held various positions in Dstl and the wider MOD, including: Head of MOD's Counter-Terrorism Science and Technology Centre; Dstl Programme Director (Research and Technology); and Strategic Advisor to the MOD Chief Scientific Advisor, where he led the Science & Technology strand to UK Defence Reform.

Dr Thompson was appointed Dstl Deputy Chief Executive in 2013 and in January 2015 combined this with leadership of Dstl's technical and strategy directorate, responsible for technical, customer and organisational strategy.

Dr Peter Thompson said: "I'm both excited and honoured to have the opportunity to lead such a prestigious scientific organisation as NPL."

Dr Martyn Sené, Deputy Director and Director of Operations, acted as interim CEO following the retirement of Managing Director Dr Brian Bowsher on 30 June 2015.
