The MoU will see scientists from both institutions working collaboratively on a range of research activities, with a particular focus on Quantum; Surface & Nanoanalysis; Materials Science (including organic electronics; tribology and modelling); Mathematics (applied, statistics, machine learning and computing); Climate Science and Synthetic Biology.

The MoU was signed by Dr Brian Bowsher, Managing Director of NPL and Professor James Stirling, Provost of Imperial College London.

Dr Brian Bowsher, NPL's Managing Director, said:

"NPL and Imperial College have had a long history of collaborative working. This Memorandum of Understanding will enable our institutions to work together even more effectively and builds on our previous collaborative successes. It combines our common interests and expertise in a number of key scientific areas and will provide a framework to share our people and resources."

Professor James Stirling, Provost of Imperial College London, said:

"Global challenges such as climate change and energy security cannot be solved by individual organisations alone and that is why long-standing collaborations such as ours are so important. I know I speak on behalf of Imperial's researchers when I say we look forward to broadening and deepening our relationship further."
