Measurements for Carbon Capture and Storage

The development and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies will inevitably create novel measurement challenges for the technical operation and for the plant's environmental performance. NPL has over 25 years' experience in environmental monitoring and consultancy. We are at the forefront of efforts to ensure that measurements are demonstrably valid.

Measurements for Carbon Capture and Storage

As new technology, activities and challenges arise, the UK's measurement infrastructure needs to keep in step. The Centre for Carbon Measurement at NPL aims to ensure the measurement infrastructure is there to respond to the challenge of climate change.

A comprehensive measurement infrastructure is needed for CCS in order to:

  • Demonstrate processes are performing as expected
  • Aid the understanding of issues and improve performance
  • Monitor and manage environmental impact
  • Engender confidence in the CCS process, for government, investors and the general public

NPL's expertise in environmental monitoring and gas analysis can be applied to assess fugitive emissions across the carbon capture and storage chain, and impurities within the CO2 stream.
