This is the first online open unit from NPL's 'Measurement Explained' series. This unit introduces Metrology, the science of measurement, along with some basic metrology concepts. It covers topics such as 'accuracy', 'precision', 'calibration', 'traceability', but also outlines the International System of Units and the realisation of the SI Base Units.

Traceable Measurement of Drivetrain Components for Renewable Energy Systems

About this unit

This Measurement Explained e-learning course will serve as an introduction that complements further face-to-face training sessions.

This course will introduce:

  • The current state of the wind energy industry
  • The basics of wind turbine and drivetrain structure
  • An overview of common mechanical problems that occur with each of these components

Microwave NDT for Composites Explained

About this unit

This Measurement Explained online unit introduces microwave non-destructive testing (NDT) for the inspection and characterisation of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite materials and structures. After providing some background to the technique, the course moves on to cover the equipment and procedures involved in microwave inspection.

Unit format

This course is divided into four sections:

  • Introduction to microwave inspection
  • Preparing for measurement
  • Performing the measurement
  • After the measurement
