The field of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is multidisciplinary and involves physics, chemistry, engineering and the life sciences. As a fairly recent area of research and professional activity, it lacks a structured set of educational resources, especially on standardisation and biomedical applications. This course is aimed at providing such a solution: it synthesises the state-of-the-art advancements within this field and delivers reference information for both general audience (with a scientific background) and experienced professionals in the field.

This course has been created as part of the EU-financed NanoMag project, and results from the collaboration between NPL, Acreo Swedish ICT AB, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (grant agreement no: 604448).

Main Objectives

This e-Learning course aims to:

  • Develop awareness of the pros and cons deriving from the use of MNPs, in order to sustain an informed opinion on this topic.
  • Emphasise the benefits deriving from the standardisation and improvement in analysis methods of magnetic nanoparticles
  • Provide the foundation to enable further study in this field

Learning objectives

Learners completing the four modules of the e-Learning course will:

  • Understand the structural and magnetic properties of MNPs, with a focus on how properties on the nanoscale differ from the bulk properties of the magnetic material
  • Become familiar with a range of synthesis techniques and their relative advantages
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of using MNPs in biomedical and other applications
  • Become familiar with a range of techniques for the characterisation of MNPs
  • Understand the need for the standardisation of such characterisation techniques

  • Scientists entering the field
  • Professionals who are unfamiliar with the physical principles of magnetic materials at the nanoscale
  • Medical professionals who want to review progress on MNP research within the biomedical sphere
