About this course

The 'Dimensional Measurement: Measurement User' course introduces dimensional metrology, improves measurement behaviours and supports good measurement practice. In addition, it explores the relevance of Dimensional Measurement to all stages of the engineering process.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the relevance of Dimensional Measurement, including the use of dimensional and geometrical tolerances, to all stages of the engineering process
  • Understand the use of datum systems in Dimensional Measurement
  • Interpret tolerance frames with and without datum references, and understand the shapes of the associated tolerance zones
  • Interpret tolerance frames for the different geometrical characteristics of form, location, orientation, and run-out
  • Understand principles of measurement that allow the formation of a measurement strategy, including measurement uncertainty, calibration and traceability

The 'Introduction to Geometrical Tolerancing' blended learning course provides the knowledge and skills to enable the fundamental understanding of theory and practice of Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing. For this reason, this course is specially targeted at the design community new to this field.

  • Recognise National and International Specification Standards
  • Understand the structure of the ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) system
  • Identify the six degrees of freedom of a rigid body
  • Understand a datum reference system consisting of primary, secondary and tertiary datums
  • Understand how datums are derived from datum features, or datum targets
  • Interpret tolerance frames with and without datum references
  • Understand the possible shapes of tolerance zones
  • Distinguish between tolerances of form, location, orientation, and run-out
  • Understand that tolerances of location, orientation and run-out require a datum reference, while tolerances of form do not
  • Distinguish between 'Regardless of Feature Size' and 'Maximum Material Requirement'
  • Perform calculations against tolerance and zone type, to determine whether a part is in tolerance
