Dr Roger Morrell is an Emeritus Fellow in Materials Science with more than than 40 years' experience of material characterisation in the fields of mechanical testing, microstructural evaluation and thermal expansion measurement. His internationally recognised material specialisation is advanced engineering ceramics and hard materials, but applies characterisation knowledge to all material types, including polymers and polymer matrix composites.
He has been a visiting professor at the University of Manchester and the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria.
Roger is a member of several BSI committees, convenes several WGs in CEN and ISO Committees for advanced ceramics, and is responsible for more than 25 published standards in this field. He has authored or co-authored three books and several conference proceedings, and has published over 130 scientific papers and eight NPL Measurement Good Practice Guides.
Roger is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
Roger operates NPL's thermal expansion dilatometric measurement facility which is used almost continuously in support of NPL's internal programmes and commercial customers, including those in the aerospace and defence sectors.
