Dr Kamal Hossain joined NPL after completing a PhD in physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. Kamal's research centred on the use of high-resolution electron microscopy to understand how the microstructure of materials affects their performance in harsh environments.
Since 2000, as Research Director, Kamal has been responsible for the strategic development of NPL's scientific research, developing partnerships with academia, business and government. In 2008, he took on the additional role of leading NPL's international work and became the Research and International Director.
Kamal has extensive experience of advisory work for the Government, the EU and UNIDO, serving on a range of national and international committees. He chaired the G7 initiative on Advanced Materials and Standard, known as VAMAS. He was a member of the EU's Advisory Committee for two Framework programmes, and a member of the European Measurement Research Programme Committee.
Kamal is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and has a visiting Chair at the University of Surrey in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. In 2012, Kamal was appointed Chairperson of the European Metrology Research Association (EURAMET) and played a leading role in the development and establishment of a 600 million Euro Metrology Research Programme (EMPIR). In 2009, Kamal was honoured with an OBE for services to industry.
