Sir David Grant was appointed Chairman of NPLML in May 2015. During his career, he has held leadership roles in industry and academe. Appointments included Technical Director, General Electric Company plc from 1991 to 2001 and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University from 2001 to 2012. David was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to engineering, technology, and skills.
He is Senior Independent Director of Renishaw plc; Senior Independent Director of IQE plc; and is a non-executive Director of Dstl. He is Chair of STEMNET, a charity that works with schools and industry to encourage youngsters to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.
David has served as a Vice-President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology; and from 2007 to 2012 he was a Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has been a Council Member of EPSRC and a Governing Board Member of Innovate UK. His PhD in Engineering Science was awarded by the University of Durham in 1974. In 1997, he was made a CBE for his contribution to the UK Foresight Programme. David was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1997 and elected an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge, in 2000.
