Quantum effects inspire new metrology for biosciences

Alex Jones, Principal Research Scientist at NPL, explores quantum’s involvement in various biological processes and the range of applications this could lead to.

Since the discovery in biophysics that some creatures use quantum effects to sense the Earth’s magnetic field, it has inspired the development of new metrology technologies for the biosciences.

Speaking on Physics World’s podcast, Jones discusses the quantum phenomenon in living things and focusses on the growing evidence that quantum effects are involved in animal navigation and how this might be exploited in biological measurement.
