NPL receives IOP award

NPL has been awarded the Apprenticeship Employer Award 2021

The Institute of Physics’ Apprenticeship Employer Award recognises and acknowledges the variety of approached taken to apprenticeships by organisations of different size. NPL has received the 2021 Apprenticeship Employer Award in the Large category for inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers and enabling innovation to thrive by fostering enthusiasm from energetic, enthusiastic and talented young people.

As the UK’s National Metrology Institute, NPL recognises the importance of promoting STEM activities and inspiring the next generation, so after 20 years, NPL restarted its apprenticeship programme in 2013, recruiting Junior Science apprentices.

Since then, NPL has add more apprenticeships including Engineering, Metrology (leading the trailblazer for both level 3 and 5), IT, Business Administration, Digital Marketing and Finance. The programme is continually reviewed and improved to ensure it delivers impact for apprentices and the organisation. Recent enhancements include deeper collaboration between supervisors, training providers and apprentices to provide an even more professional, streamlined and enjoyable experience.

The Apprenticeship Scheme has provided a new source of skills and talent, as well as great ambassadors for NPL, with 80% of apprentices haven gone on to permanent roles within NPL or secured part-funding towards a degree.

More than just apprenticeships, NPL provides support and helps to build skills for life; including personal development, mental health awareness, IT training and Outreach opportunities.

Providing a route into science for everyone interested is vital to the success of NPL’s apprentice programme. This external recognition supports NPL’s vision that differences must be celebrated to bring success. The programme has enabled talented people to develop knowledge and skills, whilst getting their first taste of working in a science organisation – becoming and inspiring the scientists and engineers of the future.

Penny Owen, Commercial Director and NPL’s Apprenticeship Sponsor said: “I am delighted that NPL has received this award as it reflects our commitment to both our apprentices, and the Apprenticeship Scheme. The scheme brings huge value to all involved, offering young people the chance to make an impact in the workplace from day one.”
