The apprenticeship scheme at NPL offers young people the chance to make a real impact. They push the boundaries of education and skills and make a difference to the biggest challenges facing the UK and beyond.
In 2019, NPL welcomed a new cohort of apprentices – one of them being the 100th apprentice since 2013. A momentous milestone in a programme that has enabled some enthusiastic and talented people to develop knowledge and skills, whilst getting their first taste of working in an exciting organisation.
NPL’s well established Apprenticeship Scheme has a portfolio of offerings across all aspects of the business to suit everyone. Six years ago, we started with Junior Science apprenticeships and since then have added Engineering, Metrology, Business Administration, Marketing, Finance and IT.
The Apprenticeship Scheme has provided a new source of skills and talent, as well as great ambassadors for NPL. Many of our apprentices have gone on to permanent roles within NPL or secured part-funding towards a degree.
Jamie Mewburn-Crook, Materials Characterisation Group at NPL said:
“During my time at NPL I have learnt a lot about 3D printing. It is a passion of mine and have had the opportunity to take it to the next level. 3D printing has many benefits from removing the need for animal tests to creating a new artefact as a standard. I’ve built a full-sized pelvis with surrounding organs which helps in improving the quality of life for prostate cancer patients. I’ve designed new jigs which have saved weeks in staff time, thousands of pounds and, added repeatability and reproducibility to the tests and calibrations performed at NPL. As an extension of upskilling myself, NPL has given me fantastic opportunities such as participating in lab tours with BEIS and Sir Vince Cable, talking to Chris Skidmore, creating a new 3d printing plastic as well as being nominated for the IOPs apprentice of the year award.”
