The telecoms sector has done a lot of work with timing experts to understand the reliance on timing over recent years, however, next generation telecoms technologies are likely to rely on very accurate, synchronised time signals and assured, primary sources are likely to be necessary. Led by NPL, the National Timing Centre (NTC) programme aims to pave the way for trusted and assured time and frequency distribution across the UK.
Alongside programmes such as NPL’s NTC, and the 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy, this report, delivered by the Telecoms Diversification Taskforce, aims to ensure the security of UK telecoms networks.
Leon Lobo, Head of the National Timing Centre, NPL, said: “The Taskforce report highlights key areas that the UK needs to accelerate toward a secure and prosperous Telecoms supply chain. A national capability in resilient timing is going to be crucial for CNI systems, underpinning operational capability, enabling future applications and reducing our dependence on global navigation satellite systems.”
