Delivering confidence in the performance of materials 

How materials perform is critical to the success of new and updated products. Industry needs to be sure that new materials will function in the way they expect and that any traditional materials used in new ways will not fail in service, even in extreme conditions.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) have the capabilities, equipment and experience to provide customers with the most accurate and authoritative materials measurements in the UK. Our world experts in complementary disciplines are available to help clarify requirements, interpret results and solve problems for customers. We can provide detailed, independent analysis to accelerate development, increase both the performance and quality of products and identify the root cause for any failures in materials, products or structures.

12:30 - 12:45 - Advanced Materials Metrology Strategy: Impact from ScienceProf. JT Janssen, Chief Scientist, NPL

Metrology is the science of measurement and underpins the use of all materials in all application areas. Without being able to accurately measure the properties of materials and the performance of products, there is a lack of confidence across supply chains which hampers the growth of new industries. This means companies cannot innovate.

Metrology is crucial for advanced materials. In this talk, the UK’s recently published ‘Advanced Materials Metrology Strategy’ will be introduced, describing both the drivers and future challenges that need to be addressed for Advanced Materials across many industry sectors, as identified by UK stakeholders.

To enable innovation in the advanced materials sector requires measurement capabilities in-line, in-situ and utilising multiple data sources. But what does this mean in reality? In this workshop, NPL's expert metrology team will provide an overview of the Advanced Materials Metrology Strategy and introduce technologies and case studies that cover the breadth of opportunities in advanced materials.
