Conference on Applied Radiation Metrology 2022

CARM is returning for 2022 as an in person conference hosted on site at NPL.

CARM is the latest in a series of annual conferences run by NPL for the nuclear metrology community, bringing together expertise from areas including nuclear medicine, the nuclear industry, manufacturers, radioanalytical laboratories and academia.

The meeting will cover the role of nuclear metrology across life sciences and health, energy and environment, and security. In all cases, sessions will include presentations on current advances in the application of metrology, followed by discussion of the challenges and needs of metrology in these sectors. The aim of these sessions is to solicit feedback from the user community, identifying measurement needs and how these can be supported by Measurement Institutes.

There is an opportunity to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations, as well as a commercial exhibition. CARM will also include several working group meetings including the Ionising Radiation Metrology Forum (IRMF). The meeting is a great opportunity to keep up to date on progress in nuclear metrology sphere and to network with colleagues across a wide range of sectors. If you wish to submit an abstract for consideration as a poster or oral paper, please complete this form. The deadline for abstract submission is 1 Septmber 2022.

We are changing the format of the conference this year now that we are moving back to face-to-face meetings. The days of the conference are themed by sector and tickets can be bought individually or for the whole conference.

  • Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November - Nuclear Medicine
  • Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 November - Nuclear Energy, Environment and Security
  • Thursday 24 November - IRMF

All ticket types include one conference dinner. Please select the date of the dinner you would like to attend in the order form. You can attend both conference dinners at an additional cost.

If you would like to register as an exhibitor please register here.

Nuclear Medicine Metrology

The Nuclear Medicine stream will focus partly on MPACE accreditation this year, with talks introducing the scheme and its requirements as well as providing guidance on achieving and maintaining accreditation. Abstracts are encouraged from those currently applying for MPACE accreditation especially discussing techniques used for meeting the requirements or pitfalls encountered along the way.  Abstracts covering topics including medical isotope production, radiochemistry, radiobiology, activity measurement, quantitative imaging techniques, artificial intelligence and dosimetry are encouraged also.

Nuclear Energy and Environment

The Nuclear Energy and Environment sessions will focus on measurement challenges around future nuclear energy development and operation, including large scale nuclear, small modular reactors and fusion. Abstracts are also encouraged on the applications of radionuclide metrology for enhancing the understanding of historical and future climate change, improved capabilities for waste characterisation and decommissioning of nuclear sites, and measurement of environmental radioactivity.

Security

The main areas of interest are the security of nuclear energy supply, preparedness and emergency response in the case of a radiological incident. This includes approaches for rapid, traceable monitoring of radioactivity and neutrons. A further topic of interest is nuclear forensics, for example improved methods for determining the source of nuclear contamination.
