Srinath Rajagopal

Srinath Rajagopal

Principal Scientist and Science Area Leader

Srinath is the Science Area Leader in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics group. His primary expertise is in the development of traceable primary and secondary standard measurement techniques in the field of ultrasound pressure and power areas. He has been involved with, co-developing new calorimetric and solid-state pyroelectric techniques to measure ultrasonic output power, and acoustic characterization of tissue-like materials at elevated frequencies relevant to medical imaging.

In addition to his science role, he has previously led hydrophone calibration and power measurement services for a period of eight years during which he made significant improvements to the operational efficiency of the service resulting in doubling the number of annual calibrations. Srinath led the second international key-comparison of hydrophone calibration standards (CCAUV.U-K2). He has published/co-authored over 20 papers.

Srinath represents the UK interests on the International Electrotechnical Commission TC87/WG8 Ultrasonics – Field Measurements and is the project leader for hydrophone calibration standard IEC 62127-2.

Srinath joined NPL in 2007 as a Higher Research Scientist. He started his career as a Research Physicist at Precision Acoustics Ltd in 2005. He has a BEng and MRes degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, India and University of Strathclyde, UK, respectively. He completed his PhD from University College London in laser generation of ultrasound using nanocomposites for application in hydrophone calibrations up to 100 MHz.
