Sam Hunt is a Senior Scientist in satellite Earth Observation metrology. He joined NPL in 2016, after completing a traineeship with ESA at ESTEC in the Netherlands. There he worked as part of the Sentinel-3/OLCI performance team. Prior to this he received an MPhys Physics degree from the University of Durham, UK in 2014.
Sam’s work aims to contribute to tackling the climate emergency by improving the quality of and confidence in satellite Earth observations, using insights from metrology.
Current Interests
Sam leads the NPL activity around the development and application of metrological methods to facilitate generation of high-quality Fundamental Data Records (FDRs) of satellite Earth Observation data. These are formed of long-term satellite series observations, with Sam focused on visible and thermal radiometric imagery with climate applications. This work primarily spans sensor modelling and uncertainty analysis, satellite-to-satellite intercalibration, and data quality assurance.
He is involved in the ESA TRUTHS mission development. There he leads the NPL team’s algorithm development activity, which includes the on-ground radiometric processing, performance modelling and target satellite cross-calibration.
Additionally, he leads the team’s software development strategy.
