Piero Miloro

Senior scientist

Piero Miloro received his MSc in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2010, with a thesis on cavitation instabilities on space propellers. In the same year, he started a PhD in innovative technologies at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. He defended his thesis on ultrasound thrombolysis in 2014.

In 2013, he visited the laboratories of the Institute of Cancer Research, working on acoustic characterisation of materials for high-intensity ultrasound therapy.

Piero joined NPL in 2015 in the Medical Ultrasound group and has worked here since then.

He is an active member of several different societies, including the British Medical Ultrasound Society and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He is co-author of more than 20 scientific abstracts and papers.

Current interests

Piero is responsible for the therapeutic ultrasound area at NPL. He is currently involved in different research projects on ultrasound safety, in-vitro acoustic stimulation of cells, tissue- mimicking materials manufacturing, and acoustic characterisation of materials.

He is the measurement service provider for the hydrophone calibration service at NPL, with around 300 certificates issued every year. He is also responsible for measurement of the acoustic properties of materials, and thermal test objects manufacturing for NPL.
