James manages a number of activities to support the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, most recently working on the development of the 2021 refresh of the UK Measurement Strategy. He is responsible for NPL’s foresighting activities, managing a diverse team to identify major trends in the future of society and industry, analyse which technologies will be vital to enable them, and explore their implications on metrology.
James joined NPL in 2008, when his work centered on the use and development of contacting probes and optical systems for micro-co-ordinate metrology. He was involved in several UK and EU projects focusing on metrology for micro-manufacturing. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from Bath University (UK), and completed his PhD in Manufacturing Engineering and Process Control with the University of Nottingham (UK) in 2014.
