Dr Jessica Maclean

Senior scientist

Dr Jessica Maclean joined NPL as a Senior Research Scientist in 2021 where she is working on the microfabrication of ion microtraps, including yield optimisation and new designs within the Quantum Information Processing group.

Following a PhD in the epitaxy of simple and complex oxides at the University of Cambridge, she was a Research Scientist at QinetiQ Malvern, developing selective area epitaxy of III-V and dilute nitride semiconductors and later she led the device process development and process integration for Gallium Nitride RF devices for military programmes and the electron beam lithography of Indium Antimonide high speed transistors for a commercial customer.

She joins from the University of Nottingham where she was a Physics Tutor and a Co-investigator Researcher in the UK QT Hub for Sensors and Metrology where she developed photonic devices and atom chips for quantum sensing experiments using cold atoms for EU, EPSRC and DARPA research programmes.

Areas of interest:

  • Ion microtraps for quantum technologies
  • Scalability of ion microtraps for quantum metrology
  • Atom chips for quantum technologies
  • Semiconductor epitaxy and device processing
