STEM futures

STEM futuresABOUT STEM FUTURES

The Defence and Security enterprise must be fit for the future, working at the forefront of technological advancement. To do this we must steward science and technology expertise by attracting and retaining skilled people and enhancing their STEM expertise.

There are demonstrable benefits to both the person and their employer. STEM Futures develops technical skills, knowledge and experience through on-the-job learning via placements supplemented by education. This enhances personal networks and reduces training costs.

Approaches and outcomes
Technical hubs

If you are interested in learning more why not get in touch?

You too could join one or more of these Hubs, upskill and potentially embark on an exchange project or secondment with one of the leading scientific organisations that make-up the STEM Futures Network. Secondment placements can be in technical, theoretical, or strategy and business development areas, either at a host institute or via virtual placements.

QuantumQuantum hub

Within the Quantum Hub we bring together a collective group of Partners with a vested interest in Quantum Technologies development and implementation, pooling the resources of knowledge and skills across this group.  Quantum Hub Partners encourage and promote Quantum Technology (QT) knowledge and skills exchange, including practical laboratory skills, theoretical practices, and strategy development between Partner organisations and throughout the QT sector. Our areas of focus include, but are not limited to: magnetometry, interferometry, navigation (including GNSS), quantum sensors, communication and time and frequency (including distribution and resiliency).

DataData hub

The Data Hub was created to establish links between organisations across academia, government and industry with the ultimate aim of sharing ideas and knowledge in different areas to do with data. The areas of focus for the Hub are ‘Maths and Statistics’, ‘Machine Learning and AI’, ‘Modelling Simulations’, and ‘Cyber Security’. The Data Hub is relatively new within STEM Futures and currently runs an internal series of webinars to establish stronger links between parties, and identify capabilities and areas of synergy, which will further build into partnerships and secondment programs.

Systems hub

Through NPL’s Foresighting work, we identified the need to address complexity and complex systems with new techniques and tool kits that are not yet established within the wider scientific community. Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering represent the soft and hard skills that will be needed by the scientific community to understand the complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of the world we live in. Whether you are investigating sources of noise at the nanoscale, building a national network of precision timing nodes or looking at global climate models, complexity is all around us. NPL and the STEM Futures partners are developing a new Hub where scientists and engineers can collaborate and learn from each other. The Government Office for Science, NPL, Dstl are leading the way. Supported by some of our leading academic institutions we are investing in our staff to attend the L7 Systems Thinking Apprenticeship championed by the University of Exeter.
