In 2020, a team of NPL scientists created a low cost and easy to manufacture ventilator, the PocketVent, in response to the need for affordable ventilator technologies in emerging markets to tackle the global pandemic. It is simple to use, requires limited training time for healthcare professionals and is made from widely available parts. The team, led by Jean Morris, has been awarded the President’s Special Award for Pandemic Service by the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of their contributions in helping society to address the challenges presented by COVID-19.
