World-class research that delivers impact

We push the boundaries of what is possible

Excellent science and engineering is at the heart of NPL's activities driving improved confidence in data, supporting industry and improving quality of life, both in the UK and internationally.

As the UK’s National Metrology Institute (NMI), we maintain a wide portfolio of internationally-visible research programmes helping to develop and maintain national primary measurement standards and disseminate traceability to industry. We work to advance measurement science, support development of new technologies, enable innovation and deliver solutions to national challenges, as well as launching new digital standards.

Research integrity is essential for trust in NPL, meaning you can be assured of the impartiality, probity, rigorous accuracy and reproducibility of our research. We regularly produce independent and international reviews of our science and engineering capability, quality and impact.

International Science Review

During 2022 the International Science Review 2016-2020 for NPL was completed. Professor Dame Anne Glover FRS FRSE chaired the Review Board which outlined the research capabilities, impact and outputs, as well as the future challenges for NPL science and engineering.

International Science Review

A world-leading research facility

As the UK’s NMI, our advice is always impartial and independent, meaning consumers, investors, policymakers and entrepreneurs can be confident in our research and advice.

We have more than 350 world-class laboratories, which enable the highest precision measurements to be realised. Home to over 700 scientists and engineers employed across many disciplines, from physicists to biochemists and mathematicians to materials scientists, we push the boundaries of what is possible. We represent the UK on many international networks and committees including at the highest levels of metrology.

We welcome the opportunity to deliver technical lectures on metrology and our research at universities or other organisations. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science

The Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science (PGI) is a strategic partnership between NPL, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Surrey. NPL hosts the unique, multi-disciplinary UK national centre for postgraduate research and skills development in metrology and its applications.
