Platinum palladium thermocouples

For the first time, NPL is able to offer for sale platinum/palladium thermocouples with ultra-low uncertainties and exceptional drift performance. NPL's Pt/Pd thermocouples are the fruit of extensive research and development. Importantly, they feature a novel structural design, which makes the thermocouple exceptionally robust.

The chief benefits of Pt/Pd thermocouples are extremely low drift and exceptionally good thermoelectric homogeneity, which means that very low uncertainties are achievable, and calibrations remain valid for long periods of exposure to high temperatures.

NPL currently offers UKAS calibrations up to 1500 °C employing metal-carbon eutectic fixed points. The thermocouples are also available uncalibrated.

The physical arrangement is as follows: The Pt and Pd wires are each have length 2 m. They are situated in a twin-bore alumina tube, o.d. 4 mm, length 710 mm. The thermocouple is protected by an alumina sheath, o.d. 7 mm, length 700 mm. The wires are connected to 2 m long copper cables at the reference junction, which can be enclosed in a quartz tube.
