Research Research

We provide world-class research, calibrations, specialised measurement services and training for the dosimetry of ionizing radiation in cancer therapy, diagnostics and industrial sterilisation for medicine and pharmaceutics.
  • Graphite calorimeters are the primary standards for absorbed dose at the NPL.
  • Chemical dosimetry involves determination of dose by the measurement of chemical changes induced in materials by ionising radiation.
  • In collaboration with the Maastro Clinic, Maastricht, Netherlands, NPL is developing a novel method of dosimetry using an Electronic Portal Imaging Device, a device found mounted on most clinical linacs used in hospitals for the treatment of cancer by radiotherapy.
  • NPL offers consultancies, collaborations and training, based on our scientists' wealth of experience in Monte Carlo radiation modelling and other modelling techniques.
  • NPL has developed, established and maintained primary standard ionisation chambers to enable accurate dosimetry over a wide range of radiation energies.
  • Proton and ion beams exhibit better dose characteristics than x-rays for radiotherapy.
