ASTM E 4, 2007, Standard Practices for Force Verification of Testing Machines

These practices cover procedures for the force verification, by means of standard calibration devices, of tension or compression, or both, static or quasi-static testing machines (which may, or may not, have force-indicating systems). Testing machines may be verified by one of the three following methods or combination thereof:

  • use of standard weights
  • use of equal-arm balances and standard weights
  • use of elastic calibration devices


BS EN ISO 7500-1, 2004, Metallic materials - Verification of static uniaxial testing machines - Part 1: Tension / compression testing machines - Verification and calibration of the force-measuring system

This Standard specifies the verification of tension / compression testing machines. The verification consists of a general inspection of the machine and a calibration of the force-measuring system. It addresses only the static verification of the force-measuring systems and the calibration values are not necessarily valid for high-speed or dynamic testing applications. The force-proving instrument used shall comply with the requirements specified in ISO 376.


BS EN ISO 7500-2, 1999, Metallic materials - Verification of static uniaxial testing machines - Part 2: Tension creep testing machines - Verification of the applied load

This Standard specifies the verification of testing machines used for uniaxial creep testing in tension in accordance with ISO 204. The verification consists of a general inspection of the machine and a verification of the load applied by the machine. It only applies to deadweight and lever type creep testing machines - machines with an indicator displaying the applied force should be verified in accordance with BS EN ISO 7500-1. The force-proving instrument used shall comply with the requirements specified in ISO 376.

This Recommendation gives the metrological and technical performance requirements and the inspection and testing procedures necessary for the metrological control of the force measuring system of uniaxial material testing machines subject to national laws and regulations. For metrological control, requirements for initial and subsequent verification only are covered since, in general, pattern evaluation is not considered to be practical for these measuring systems. Material testing machines that are not subject to laws and regulations and, hence, are not under metrological control, may require identical performance for their application. Most of the requirements of this Recommendation are consistent with the requirements of BS EN ISO 7500-1. The requirements for reference force measuring instruments for verifying the force measuring system of material testing machines are addressed in the draft OIML Recommendation on 'Force measuring instruments for verifying material testing machines'.
