Here is a brief summary of NPL's magnetic measurement capability:

Calibration of magnetic instruments and fields

  • Calibration of magnetic sensors from - 55 °C to 125 °C
  • DC measurements from less than 1 nT to several tesla
  • AC measurements up to 120 kHz
  • AC or DC magnetic field at a distance from an object
  • On-site AC or DC ambient magnetic field measurements
  • Helmholtz coils and solenoids calibrated from DC to 120 kHz

DC properties of magnetically soft materials

  • Normal magnetization curve
  • Hysteresis loop
  • Remanence, coercivity and relative magnetic permeability
  • Magnetic behaviour under stress levels up to ± 600 MPa

AC properties of magnetically soft materials

  • Specific total power loss
  • Specific apparent power
  • Relative magnetic permeability
  • Magnetic behaviour for operational waveforms, temperature and stress

Magnetically hard materials, permanent magnets, reference magnets

  • Properties for actual geometries and operational temperatures up to 200 °C
  • Demagnetization curve
  • Remanence, coercivity and maximum energy product
  • Gap flux density measurement of reference magnets
  • Magnetic moment

Feebly magnetic materials

  • Relative magnetic permeability
  • Supply of reference standards
