Corrosion in complex atmospheres under thermal cycles

Objectives

In the majority of laboratory experiments that are carried out to assess the corrosion resistance of materials the exposure is carried out isothermally, in air or a relatively simple atmosphere. In service, components are subjected to complex thermal cycles and multi-component atmospheres often with ash deposits present. The results of the simple laboratory tests are of limited use in predicting the behaviour of materials under these service conditions.

This project focused on the generation and analysis of metal wastage data for materials and coatings that operate in complex environments. In particular low NOx combustion environments were investigated.
