NPL EI Group Autumn Series

NPL was proud to host the SMART Group, Europe's largest technical trade association focusing on surface mount and related technologies

NPL was proud to host the SMART Group, Europe's largest technical trade association focusing on surface mount and related technologies.

NPL presented on three topics: wearable technology; high temperature electronics; and tin whiskers. An interesting part of the conference was on Industry 4.0, where two presentations discussed the implementation within the electronics assembly industry. The event was supported by Global SMT and Packaging, who put together a video capturing the highlights.

At SMTA International in Chicago on 29-30 September 2015, Chris Hunt and Bob Willis presented and helped to run a special feature area entitled Solder Paste and Solder Joint Automatic Inspection Experience. NPL presented an invited presentation on smart textiles and wearable electronics in the emerging areas track of the conference. The presentation fitted well with the theme where examples of technology convergence could be seen. In the middle of October, at an international meeting in Essen, Chris Hunt presented a review on the use of chemical electromigration to characterise and qualify electronics in terms of robustness and resistance to corrosion.

Coming up in November 2015, NPL is again joining with the SMART Group to look at inspection issues with ultra-small components at the biggest European trade fair, Productronica. Details of the joint NPL feature are given here
