Organic Electronics Emerging Electronics

Emerging electronics makes use of novel materials and novel manufacturing processes to create electronic devices that can be easily integrated into a wide range of products: from large area flexible electronics to wearables and implantable electronic devices. Understanding the impact of processing on material properties and device performance/reliability is critical.

NPL carries out world-leading metrology research to support emerging electronic technologies in several areas. We work with large industries, SMEs, universities and R&D centres to support materials and product development offering a mixture of unique measurement and modelling capability with significant know-how, accumulated through the successful delivery of numerous projects in the UK and overseas.

What is emerging electronics?

Emerging electronics makes use of novel materials and novel manufacturing processes to create electronic devices that can be easily integrated into a wide range of products: from large area flexible electronics to wearables and implantable electronic devices.

Materials systems ranging from carbon-based and hybrid semiconductors to nanomaterials and 2D materials are used as the active layers in electronic components, including: transistors, sensors, energy harvesting devices, photovoltaics and light emitting diodes. These can be manufactured in novel ways and easily integrated into different products, supporting the advanced manufacturing sector.

What does NPL do?

NPL is focused on overcoming metrology barriers for the emerging electronics UK community to increase confidence in the area, accelerate market entry and increase competitiveness. Our work is centred on four broad themes:

  • Enabling new technologies
    Understanding processing-structure-performance relationship; advanced multiscale characterisation methods (from nm to μm to cm); advanced data analysis and modelling methods.

  • Reliability
    Advanced in-situ testing facilities; long-term and accelerated testing; degradation mechanism elucidation; failure analysis; seal and barrier layer characterisation.

  • High quality advanced manufacturing
    Pre-process, in-process, post-process characterisation; non-destructive testing; spatially-resolved measurement methods; advanced data analysis and modelling methods.

  • Standardisation
    Development of best practice guides and standards through VAMAS, BSI, IPC and IEC.

Measurement and Services offered

NPL offers a broad complementary suite of measurement techniques, alongside a scientific team with significant industrial and academic experience in organic, printed, flexible and hybrid electronics, to support the development and commercialisation of emerging technologies.

NPL offers flexible options, including larger scale or longer-term arrangements, ad hoc or single orders for customers requiring irregular support and call-off contracts. We encourage our customers to work with us to determine the most suitable means of doing business.
