Portable Co-ordinate Measurement Systems Training - Level 1

A two day training course for users of large volume metrology systems.

What do portable coordinate measurement and LVM imply?

Technology for making accurate 3-dimensional (3D) measurements, which is typically applied to man-made objects for purposes such as:

  • Measuring and analysing the 3D shapes of a diverse range of objects from turbine blades and car doors to aircraft wings and ship sections
  • Working volume typically 1m - 10m, but up to 30m or more is possible
  • Building objects such as tooling jigs to a 3D design
  • Measuring system components, which are portable and can be brought to the object to enable measurement on site or at the point of production
  • Objects are typically not brought to the measurement system
  • Systems can be moved around an object to build up a full picture
  • Systems can be linked together, or designed as extended networks, to create large measuring volumes
  • Portability enables Large Volume Metrology (LVM)
  • Although not exclusively based on optics, optical methods are a significant feature of LVM system design and use

Aims & Objectives

The learner will:

  • Understand the fundamental principles and best practices of Portable Co-ordinate Measurement Systems
  • Appreciate the types of Large Volume Metrology systems available
  • Take responsibility for the measurement best practices
  • Respond to measurement results and related uncertainty
  • Communicate and question the measurement process
  • Instil the right behaviours and a questioning culture

Course Content

Day 1 - Portable co-ordinate measurement systems, Large Volume Metrology and co-ordinate principles

Including:

  • The need for LVM
  • Overview of device types

Day 2 - In depth review of the Large Volume Metrology equipment

Including:

  • Laser trackers
  • Total stations
  • CMM arms
  • Photogrammetry
