• Surface hardness (Barcol, Shore, microhardness and nanoindentation)
• Gloss and colour
• Surface roughness (contact/non-contact and AFM) and texture

• Coating adhesion
• Tack
• Thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and specific heat
• Pressure - volume - temperature (PVT) relationships
• Residual stress and strain (hole drilling)
• Surface tension (sessile drop and dynamic Wilhelmy plate techniques)
• Dielectric properties (dielectric constant, dissipation factor and impedance)

For polymer matrix composites:

• Fibre, resin and void volume fraction by either acid digestion or burn-off techniques
• Fibre/filler shape, size and orientation (including distributions)
