Physical property measurements
The following range of physical property measurements can be undertaken across a wide range of material classes:
- Density (density balance)
- Surface hardness (Barcol, Shore, microhardness and nanoindentation)
- Gloss and colour
- Surface roughness (contact/non-contact and AFM) and texture
- Wear and friction
- Scratch testing
- Coating adhesion
- Tack
- Thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and specific heat
- Pressure - volume - temperature (PVT) relationships
- Residual stress and strain (hole drilling)
- Surface tension (sessile drop and dynamic Wilhelmy plate techniques)
- Dielectric properties (dielectric constant, dissipation factor and impedance)
For polymer matrix composites:
- Fibre, resin and void volume fraction by either acid digestion or burn-off techniques
- Fibre/filler shape, size and orientation (including distributions)
