Structural Testing

There is an increasing trend within a range of industrial sectors to fabricate components such as aircraft wing boxes, yacht masts and wind turbine blades from thick material sections. However, there is concern that established test methods using thin coupon specimens are not suitable for thick section design. In addition, the vast majority of composite components experience multi-axial loading in-service, whereas existing composite material test standards are uniaxial in scope.

In addition, NPL are developing the capability to experimentally validate predicted sub-component and component performance.
