Gas Standards for Calibrating Evidential Breath-alcohol Analysers

Gas Standards

Standard gas mixtures provide an accurate and cost-effective method for calibrating evidential breath-alcohol analysers. They are stable and provide a repeatable reference concentration that can be used for regular calibrations.

Standards are available to measure ethanol concentration in exhaled breath and also to check for possible interferent species as required by OIML R 126:

Evidential breath alcohol

Gaseous Species Matrix Amount Fraction Range (mol/mol)
Ethanol Air or Nitrogen 50×10-6 – 2000×10-6
Methanol / ethanol Air or Nitrogen 100×10-6 – 1000×10-6
Acetone / ethanol Air or Nitrogen 100×10-6 – 1000×10-6
Toluene / ethanol Air or Nitrogen 100×10-6 – 1000×10-6
Methyl ethyl ketone / ethanol Air or Nitrogen 100×10-6 – 1000×10-6

Other interferent species are also available on request as specified in the OIML guide.

NPL's gas standards are certified for a period up to three years depending on the stability of the mixture. NPL offers a cost-effective re-certification service after the initial certification period has expired, ensuring temporal consistency of gas traceability.
