Gas StandardsNPL provides world-class research, consultancy, calibrations and specialised measurement services in chemical metrology.
NPL produces an extensive range of gas calibration mixtures through a chain of direct comparisons to the national measurement standards.

Further information is available on NPL gas standards:
- Gas standards for calibrating air quality monitors
- Gas standards for calibrating stack emission monitors

Larger cylinders with no rental costs
NPL's Gas Standards are supplied in 10 litre cylinders, filled in excess of 100 bar. The cylinders are sold, eliminating cylinder rental costs. This proves financially beneficial when customers require gas standards over significant periods of time.

Gas Standards Research
- This Joint Research Project funded under the EMRP addresses the need for improving the metrological traceability and comparability of measurement results in current air monitoring techniques.
- NPL is leading a European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) research project to establish a metrological infrastructure for energy gases from non-conventional sources.
- Several novel systems have been developed at NPL and patented.
- NPL aims to maintain and develop internationally acceptable primary gas standards, traceable calibration facilities, and validated measurement methods, to meet the present and future requirements of UK industry, regulations, and EC legislation and Directives.
- NPL has successfully tested the miniaturisation of gas chromatography (GC) equipment for environmental testing, in collaboration with the University of York and Dolomite (a UK company specialised in manufacturing micro-structured components).
- NPL is developing a new approach to measuring water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) directly, based on cavity ringdown infra red spectroscopy.
- A project has been undertaken to compare methods to measure the hydrocarbon dew point of natural gas.
- NPL holds the UK's natural gas reference calorimetry facility.
- Measurement of the purity of hydrogen fuel and the capacity of storage systems.
