Phase-insensitive detection for reduction of image artefacts in ultrasound breast screening

The NHS currently offers X-ray mammography to women as part of its breast cancer screening program, which provides 2D projections of tissue density in a compressed breast.

One contender for a new breast cancer screening technology is ultrasound computed tomography (UCT) - an inherently cheaper technology which could provide a 3D tissue density map without ionising radiation or breast compression. This would be more comfortable for the patient and would remove limits on the number and frequency of repeat scans due to the ionising nature of X-rays.
