Fuel cells have great potential as highly efficient and environmentally friendly energy conversion devices.

A fuel cell converts the chemical energy stored in a fuel directly into electricity via an electrochemical reaction, thereby avoiding a wasteful combustion step with its associated Carnot limitation.

If the fuel can be produced from renewable sources the entire energy chain is carbon neutral, which is critical in the long term battle against climate change.
