Successes in the discovery of nanomaterials offer the opportunity for new products that make use of the advantageous properties that often accompany materials on the nanoscale.
Once high volume manufacture of nanomaterials can be achieved then commercial applications soon follow. In this talk I will give examples of 'Nanotechnology in Action' found in commercially available products and describe where future applications may lie. Specific examples include carbon nanotube based products and self-clearing materials. Newer materials such as graphene will also be discussed as will the societal aspects of nanotechnology.
David Carey is currently a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering based in the Advanced technology Institute at the University of Surrey. He holds a PhD in Physics from Trinity College Dublin and from 2002 - 2007 was an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow. His research interests include carbon based electronic materials including carbon nanotubes and their composites, graphene and diamond-like carbon. He is also the Programme Director of the MSc in Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronic Devices.
